From Apprentice to Systems Support Lead: Adam’s NEP Journey

Adam

When Adam was considering his next career step, an apprenticeship stood out as the ideal choice. The Business Administration Apprenticeship at NEP offered him the opportunity to develop new skills, gain hands-on experience, and secure a role within Northumbria Healthcare – all while working towards a qualification.

“The apprenticeship allowed me to earn a new qualification and provided the opportunity to apply for a full-time role within NEP.”

Fast forward five years, and Adam has progressed from a Business Administration Apprenticeship to Systems Support Lead, playing a key role in helping NEP deliver an excellent service to NHS organisations.

Developing Essential Skills for Success

One of the most valuable skills Adam gained during his apprenticeship was communication. At NEP, client interaction is a key part of the job, whether it’s through email, MS Teams, or the NEP service desk.

“NEP is a customer-facing organisation, and strong communication skills are essential in providing a good customer experience. My apprenticeship helped me develop these skills, which I still rely on today.”

Alongside communication, Adam developed customer service and time management skills, which are crucial to meeting Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and ensuring clients receive the best possible support.

Support Throughout the Journey

Adam credits NEP’s supportive environment for helping him succeed in his apprenticeship, with a special mention to his mentor, Emma.

“NEP as a whole provided excellent support, but I have to give a special mention to my mentor, Emma, who guided me throughout the 18-month apprenticeship. Her ongoing support was crucial to my success.”

Building a Career at NEP

Since completing his apprenticeship, Adam has had access to numerous training and development opportunities, including courses funded by NEP through the Skills Development Network and Oracle University.

“As NEP continues to expand, new job opportunities have arisen, and I’ve been fortunate to progress into these roles.”

His apprenticeship also gave him exposure to various NEP applications, covering technical, purchasing, and customer support areas. This broad knowledge base gave him a strong foundation for career growth, preparing him for his current role.

Advice for Future Apprentices

Looking back on his experience, Adam has one simple piece of advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship:

“Do it! An apprenticeship offers great learning and growth opportunities.”

Adam’s journey at NEP is proof that apprenticeships aren’t just about gaining qualifications – they are a stepping stone to long-term career success.
